1Enroll in Health Insurance
- In Japan, you are required to enroll in health insurance. Enrolling in health insurance will lower your out-of-pocket expenses.
- There are three types of health insurance: company based health insurance, elderly healthcare system, and National Health Insurance. You must enroll in one of these. Those who don’t enroll through a company can complete enrollment through the ward office.
- When you go to the hospital, please bring your “Health Insurance Card.”
- Medical Fee Subsidy Program
The national or regional governments (prefecture, municipality, ward, town, village, etc.)
may provide partial or total subsidy for medical fees for the prevention and treatment of certain illnesses or for the improvement of welfare for people with disabilities.
- High-Cost Medical Expenses System
If the out-of-pocket medical costs incurred during a single month (between the 1st and last day of the month) becomes excessive, there is a system to refund the amount over a set limit (the maximum copayment).
2Enroll in a Pension Plan
- Anyone living in Japan between the ages of 20 and 59 is required to enroll in the “national pension.”
- There are circumstances under which foreigners may withdraw their share of “national pension” after returning to their home country.
3Payment of Taxes
- You are required to pay taxes.
- There is a national income tax and a regional residence tax. Both are calculated based on your wages.
4Separating and Taking out the Garbage
- Garbage is divided and collected in categories including “burnable trash”, “plastics”, “bottles, cans, and PET bottles”, and “paper.”
- There are set days of the week for the collection of each category. Details are displayed at the collection location, so please check this information.
- The location and time are set. You must take it out by 8 a.m.
- You can find information on separation and collection of garbage and recyclables online or through your smartphone.
- Oversized Garbage (Large Garbage)
The disposal of oversized garbage requires an application and fee. You can apply online or by phone.
